Multiplanar Reconstruction
Multiplanar reconstruction or reformatting is a post-processing technique to create new images from a stack of images in planes other than that of the original stack.
The use of thin slices increases the spatial resolution in the scan axis direction, allowing a high spatial resolution in all planes. Isotropic resolution results in high quality multiplanar and 3D reconstructions which are of particular benefit in CT angiography and virtual colonoscopy studies.
Noise
Noise is an undesirable background interference or disturbance that affects image quality. The image noise is commonly characterized by the standard deviation of CT numbers in the image of a uniform object (phantom - generally water) relative to the difference in CT numbers between water and air.
Noise is an important limiting factor of CT image quality and is characterized by a grainy appearance, sometimes described as a salt and pepper pattern. Noise as a result of low radiation dose requires a higher tube current (mA) in combination with narrow slices to maintain image noise at an acceptable level.
Number of Measurements
The number of measurements is the complete number of attenuation values measured during the acquisition of CT raw data for a single slice or volume.
Orthogonal
A plane, section or a slice perpendicular to one another.
Resolution
In medical imaging, resolution is the ability to distinguish two adjacent objects and a measurement of image quality. The resolution of tomographic images is a function of slice thickness, field of view (FOV) and matrix size. The resolution in plane is a function of FOV / matrix size.
