Magnification
Usually, magnification is the enlargement of an area by interpolation after the reconstruction of an image. Magnification does not provide more information, but allows a better view of certain object details. A zoom reconstruction is based on the raw data of the scan. Magnification software enlarges an image by mapping one pixel onto an n x n array of screen pixels (pixel stretching).
Other types of magnification include electron-optical, geometric, the product of geometric and the electron-optical magnification and enlargement by imaging procedures.
Electron-optical magnification is the ratio of the dimension of the detector input image and the size of the image on the screen. This ratio is determined by all electronic and optical imaging processes of the image chain, provided that one camera pixel is mapped onto accurately one monitor pixel.
Geometric magnification occurs in x-ray images when the focal spot is theoretically assumed to be a point and not an area. For nanofocus and microfocus radiographic systems, the focus-to-detector (film) distance and the focus-to-object (film) distance defines the geometric magnification.
The total magnification is the product of the electron-optical and geometric magnification. Possible magnifications are up to a factor of 26,000.
Magnification procedures in medical imaging are usually produced by extended distance between the subject and the image receptor.
X-Ray Film
An x-ray film is a photographic film used to generate a visual x-ray image. X-ray films are rarely used as the only radiation detector. Commonly they are used in conjunction with intensifying screens placed in the film cassette, because high resolution films have a poor sensitivity to x-rays. At direct film exposure, only a small amount of x-ray photons will be absorbed and react with the film emulsion. An intensifying screen contains scintillating materials to convert x-ray radiation into light or lows electromagnetic energies.
X-ray films provide very good spatial resolution and contrast, but need long exposures times and chemical processing.

Coronary Angiogram
A coronary angiogram (or cardiac catheterization) is the radiographic visualization of the coronary arteries after the introduction of a contrast agent. A coronary angiography can be performed for both diagnostic and interventional (treatment) purposes.
A catheter, inserted into a major blood vessel has to be maneuvered up to the coronary arteries to inject a blood compatible iodinated contrast material (dye). The x-ray visible catheter allows injecting a small amount of contrast agent selectively in the coronary arteries or the heart chambers. Continuous images are recorded (movies or cineangiogram) in multiple views from different angles are in order to ascertain the precise location and severity of coronary artery blockages. Digitized images are also saved on computer and replayed onto a video screen as needed.
A coronary angiogram is more invasive and requires more patient recovery time than coronary CT angiography. In the past, the gold standard for detecting atherosclerotic plaque was a coronary angiography and intravascular ultrasound. Today, the American Heart Association considers CT scanning to be one of the most effective, non-invasive methods for the detection of calcification in the coronary arteries.

Diaphanography
Diaphanography is a noninvasive breast imaging technique used in diagnosis of breast disease. The breast is illuminated with low intensity light and the transmission pattern of red and near-infrared radiation is detected. After amplification and reconstruction, the images are displayed on a monitor.
Results from diaphanography tend to show lower sensitivities and specificities than are found in diagnostic mammography studies. Light scanning (diaphanography and transillumination) is not recommended for screening or diagnostic evaluation of the breast.
Digital Mammography
The digital mammography is an electronic imaging procedure of the breast. The number of breast imaging facilities equipped with digital mammography (also called computed radiography mammogram (CRM), CR mammogram) is growing due to a number of advantages.
Digital images can be stored directly in a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and allows the printing, enhancement, magnification, or brightness and contrast manipulation for further evaluation. The sensitivity of digital mammography compared to film mammography is better in women with dense breasts, a population at higher risk for breast cancer, due to these post processing possibilities.
'The American College of Radiology's (ACR) Imaging Network found that digital mammography detected up to 28 percent more cancers than film-screen mammography in women age 50 and younger, premenopausal and perimenopausal women, and women with dense breasts, as reported in October 2005 in the New England Journal of Medicine.'

Advantages of digital mammography:
Faster image acquisition;
shorter examination time;
improved contrast between dense and non-dense breast tissue;
under or over x-ray exposure can be corrected without repeated mammograms;
post processing of breast images for more accurate detection of breast cancer;
Easy storage and transmission over phone lines or a network.

Existing mammography equipment can be converted to 'digital' operation, which allows cost savings compared to integrated digital mammography systems.
