(rem) The rem is the dose equivalent of the absorbed dose considering the biological efficiency of the radiation, also called quality factor. With a quality factor of 1 is 1 rem equal to 1.07185 roentgens. One millirem is one thousandth of one rem. In the SI system of units the rem is replaced by the sievert (Sv), which is numerically equal to the absorbed dose in gray modified by a radiation weighting factor. The conversion factor has been readjusted from 1 to 1.07185 so that 100 rem are equal to 1 Sv. • (DQA) This procedure is used by system operators to verify an x-ray system, gamma camera, or CT scanner operation based on relevant image quality parameters like e.g., geometric distortion, x-ray yield, signal to noise ratio. The quality assurance should carry out according to instructions of the manufacturer. See also Acceptance Checking, Calibration and Calibration Factor. Further Reading: Basics:

Noise is an undesirable background interference or disturbance that affects image quality. The image noise is commonly characterized by the standard deviation of CT numbers in the image of a uniform object (phantom - generally water) relative to the difference in CT numbers between water and air. Noise is an important limiting factor of CT image quality and is characterized by a grainy appearance, sometimes described as a salt and pepper pattern. Noise as a result of low radiation dose requires a higher tube current (mA) in combination with narrow slices to maintain image noise at an acceptable level. Further Reading: News & More:
