Aerosol Method
The aerosol method uses technetium-labeled DTPA crushed by an atomizer into small particles. This aerosol inhales the patient during the aerosol ventilation scintigraphy to study airways disease.
Alpha Decay
The alpha decay is a corpuscular radiation. Two protons and two neutrons (a helium core) are emitted from the atomic nucleus. Because of the high biological effectiveness, the use of alpha particle radiation is not allowed in diagnostic nuclear medicine.
Anion
An anion is a negative charged ion; the atom has more electrons than protons. Anions are attracted from the positively charged anode. This is a basic part for producing radiation in the x-ray tube.
Antiparticle
An antiparticle is a subatomic particle similar in mass but with opposite electromagnetic properties. Most particles have their antiparticles, electron - positron, etc. Antimatter is composed of antiparticles. Colliding of a particle with its respective antiparticle leads in case of low-energy particles mostly to photon production, in case of high-energy particles to exotic heavy particles.
Auger Effect
A lower orbited electron leaves the atom - the reoccupation of this vacancy by a higher orbited electron leads to the emission of energy which in turn leads to the emission of a second electron, the Auger electron.
